10 Unit Play. Take #406 Under in New York Giants @ Houston Texas (1p.m., Saturday, August 17 NFL+) This total has gone up 4 points and now the value clearly lies with the under. The Giants put up just 14 points in their opening preseason game and I an not sold on their quarterback rotation of Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Tommy DeVito. They have experience but they are just not very good. This is the Texans third preseason game, and they got off to a hot start last week against Pittsburgh but scored just 3 points in the second half. Many of points came off Pittsburgh turnovers and I do not see them being as fortunate today. Houston had just 244 yards in that game, and I do not see them lighting up the scoreboard in this game either. Take the under and we will not worry about who covers the spread and just collect with the total.

We will side with the over as we like the quarterback rotation for each team. Jerod Mayo needs to get the offense on track after it fell apart when Tom Brady left. Look for a strong showing by the Patriots and expect the combined scoring to reach close to 40 points in this game. The Panthers do not have many quarterbacks on the roster and that should bode well to them moving the football up and down the field.

The Saints posted 26 points against the Chiefs and the Chargers put up 34 points against the Rams. In that game at SoFi Stadium Easton Stick put up big numbers completing a lot of short passes. That is the recipe for success in preseason against backups. The Saints threw the football 38 times last week and all 3 of their quarterbacks played well combing for 3 touchdown passes. The last 6 times these teams have met, the over has hit in all of those games. We will not worry about who wins this game and just collect with the over.

Like the rotation of quarterbacks better for Cleveland in this game and feel Zach Wilson will not be up to task. 10 Unit Play. Take #417 Pittsburgh Steelers over Jacksonville Jaguars (7p.m., Saturday, August 20 local) Just not sure why Jacksonville is favored by this many points. Mike Tomlin has a solid NFL Preseason record of 35-24 and most of that has come in the last 5 years there were preseason games (13-3). Jacksonville is 0-2 and the oddsmakers must expect them to come out blazing in this game to rile up the fanbase. I don’t see that happening, as this is the third game of the preseason, and they have a veteran head coach and is not all that worried about winning these games. Pittsburgh has three solid quarterbacks for this game and the quarterback job is wide open. All will want to play well in this game to make the case that they should be the starter. Throw in a solid core of young wide receivers and I feel Pittsburgh will win this game straight-up. This matchup during the regular season has been dominated by the road team and the underdog and look for that to hold true in the preseason as well.

No coach really wants to look this good in preseason and it would not surprise me if Sean McDermott pulled it back a little bit in this game. Green Bay has two capable backups in Jordan Love and Kurt Benkert. The latter played pretty well last week against the Jets, and he is capable to moving the football in this game. 10 Unit Play. Take New York Jets over Green Bay Packers (4:25p.m., Saturday, August 21 NFLX Network) NFL PRESEASON GAME OF THE YEAR. We will take the money line instead of the point spread since preseason no longer has overtime and 3 is not as much a key number in NFL Preseason compared to the regular season. The Packers have issues at quarterback with Jordan Love injured and Aaron Rodgers not playing for fear or injury. They had to sign a quarterback off the street this week to suit up in this game and I just do not see them doing any better than they did last week against Houston. The Texans might have the worst roster in the league, and they still put up 26 points against the Packers and won that game by 19 points. The Jets were not that impressive on offense against the Giants, but their defense was allowing just 163 total yards. The Football Jets have a defensive minded rookie coach and that produced five sacks in the opening game of exhibition football. The Jets were able to move the ball through the air and if their quarterbacks can complete 65% of their passes in this game that should be good enough. Best of Luck – Doc’s Sports

Oakland has just three quarterbacks on the roster and they have looked impressive all exhibition season long entering this game at 2-0. Nathan Peterman looks like a different quarterback in Oakland and the Raiders have a major edge in the second and third strings. Many people believe that they are tanking this season and if they get off to a bad start they will struggle to stay relevant for the 16-week regular season. The Giants are in panic mode at the present time suffering key injuries last week against Cleveland at the wide receiver position. They cannot afford anymore injuries to key personal over the next two weeks and thus I expect them to play this game cautiously. The Jets have been awful in their first two preseason games totaling just 13 points and expect them to play their starters a little longer in order to gain some confidence. 1 Unit Play. #242 Take Arizona Cardinals over Dallas Cowboys (Thursday 8 pm NBC) For some reason the NFL decided to move this game to Thursday this week in hopes that the field will be in playable condition this year after the game was cancelled in 2016. Arizona has already stated that they will not play any starters in this game but that being said I like the quarterback situation better as they have some decent back-ups. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is just 8-17 ATS in 25 preseason games. Take a shot with the underdog on Thursday night.

10 Unit Play. #273 Take Tennessee Titans over Oakland Raiders (Saturday 8 pm CBS) The Raiders struggle to get fans and it will be even harder to draw fans for a Saturday preseason game that starts at 5 pm local time. Tennessee is coming off a disappointing performance last week against Carolina and expect them to play much better against a much lesser opponent on Saturday. Both teams have just three quarterbacks but I really believe all three of the Titans quarterbacks can move the football. Tennessee actually ran the ball well against a stout Carolina defense last week average 4 yards per carry with multiple back seeing action. As we saw last week with our San Francisco selection, it is just hard to lay this many points in exhibition play. A lot of people are high on Oakland this season but I am not one of them. One must remember that they lost six of their last nine games to close out the 2015 season. Take the points as we expect Tennessee to win straight-up and getting this many points is just icing on the cake.

10 Unit Play. #429 Take San Francisco over Denver (Saturday 9 pm) This line is a clear overreaction to Denver’s performance last Thursday against Chicago. They dominated that game from start to finish but I just do not see that happening again on Saturday. Kubiak has been a head coach for 10 years and he knows how preseason works. San Francisco played much better than their 13-point output would indicate last Sunday against Houston. Their first string players dominated that game but turnovers did them in. Expect them to win this game straight-up and getting points is just icing on the cake.

By winning the Super Bowl they year after John Fox left Denver, Coach Kubiak has nothing to prove in this game. Expect Paxton Lunch to struggle playing most of the second half for Denver, a team that did not have a very good offense last year. Coach Fox is 10-4 straight-up in Week 1 of the exhibition season during his 14 years as a head coach. Chicago dominated Week 1 last year beating the Dolphins by 17 points and expect a similar result tonight at Soldier Field.

Baltimore was ravaged by injuries last season and expect them to take a cautious approach during the exhibition season. Would go higher but Coach Harbaugh has an impressive record in Week 1 of exhibition play. That being said, I expect the Panthers to dominate the second half of this game and win straight-up. New England still has major questions surrounding the status of Tom Brady and thus Jimmy Garoppolo needs playing time with the first string. 10 Unit Play. #426 Take Green Bay Packers over Pittsburgh Steelers (Sunday 1 pm NFL Network) NFL Preseason Game of the Year. We have had good luck with the Steelers in the preseason in year’s past but things have changed in recent years. Pittsburgh should not be giving points to anybody let alone to a team as quality as the Green Bay Packers. Pittsburgh is 2-11 ATS in their last 14 preseason games (1 push). Green Bay moved the football well against New England they just had trouble finishing off drives in the red zone. You can expect them to work out those kinks and be much better today against Pittsburgh. Big Ben is a solid quarterback but after him things get much worse after that. Landry Jones have been given ample opportunity to see if he can play and the early results are that he cannot. Pittsburgh has been long known as the steel curtain defense but they are in transition to a cover-2 and did not perform well in either games against Minnesota or Jacksonville. Neither one of those teams are offense juggernauts. Getting points in just icing on the cake, as Green Bay will win this game straight-up. Finally this is a home game for Packer Coach Mike McCarthy, as he grew up in Pittsburgh and he is 7-2 straight-up in Week 2 Preseason games. Best of Luck – Doc’s Sports. 10 Unit Play. #420 Take Over in Denver Broncos vs. Houston Texans (Saturday 8 pm) The Texans round out their preseason home stand on Saturday night with a games against Denver and a familiar face in Gary Kubiak. The former Texan head coach is returns to Houston with a much better quarterback in Peyton Manning who should see some action in this game. Denver put up 22 points in their preseason opening game against a much better defense in Seattle than they will face tonight in Houston. The Texans are coming off a victory against San Francisco last week putting up 23 points. Houston also have a quarterback battle brewing between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallet and both will want to impress in this game. But the main reason for this stat is that Gary Kubiak teams are 24-9 going over the posted total in preseason game. Oddsmakers have yet to catch-up with the scoring in preseason games and we will again take advantage of a weak number.

That just makes this that much stronger of a play for us this week at Cleveland, a team we went against and won with last week. The same reasons apply this week with Buffalo, as they have an open competition for the starting quarterback position and you can bet all of them will try and make their case to be the man. Johnny Manziel played pretty well last week and thus I expect him to implode this week. Take the road team in this affair.

There is a quarterback competition going on in Buffalo and you expect all of them to play their hearts out hoping to make an impression on the offensive statff. That being said Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel, Tyrod Taylor, and Matt Simms are not rookies and have some experience in the league (the last two in the prior preseasons). Carolina has a decent quarterback rotation as well but I just think Buffalo and their new head coach want this game a little bit more. Coach Ryan has to implement a new 3-4 scheme on defense and they may blitz in a little in this game to so if they have any playmaking reserves.

Joe Philbin is just 4-9 straight-up in the preseason and an even worse 3-10 against the spread. This is the 14th year that John Fox is a head coach and he is 9-4 straight-up in his first preseason game over this span. Washington won three of their four preseason games last season and RG3, Colt McCoy, and Kirk Cousins all have some regular season experience and moments. Historically this game has played under the total but tonight we see this one going over. Most think of the Pittsburgh Steelers as a defensive minded team but this years unit is rebuilding and the offense has a very explosive group of playmakers up and down the depth chart. The Vikings figure to be a run the ball first offense this year, especially with Adrian Peterson back in the mix but Teddy Bridgewater showed some promise as the 2014 season went along and the Vikings were actually a cash machine in the second half of the season, posting a 7-2 ATS record. Predicting the NFL Preseason is always a tough chore but we think there is some value in the over on Sunday night as we expect both teams to try and establish the pass early, putting points on the board throughout the first half in this one.

10 Unit Play. #265/#717 Take Dallas Cowboys over Miami Dolphins (Saturday 7 pm CBS 4 Miami) NFL Preseason Game of the Year. Both of these coaches are on the hot seat this year as both teams underachieved last year. The key points to making this a strong are as follows. 1) Joe Philbin does not care about preseason. He is 3-8 in his 2+ plus and 1-1 this season. Atlanta tried to give them the game in Week 1 and they still lost. He has a 2-9 ATS record and 0-2 in Week 3 home games. Dallas got QB Tony Romo back under center last week (threw a TD pass) and put up a ton of points in their loss against Baltimore. The Cowboys really should have won that game but gave up a couple of fluke plays (fumble TD & a punt return TD) and I really feel we are in good shape in they can prevent these type of scores tonight. This play is very similar to San Diego last year, as they were 0-2 entering Week 3. No team wants to go winless in the preseason especially when the owner is Jerry Jones. Thus I feel Dallas will give the extra effort to win this game straight-up. Getting points is just icing on the cake.

The rule of illegal contact being enforced this year is primarily due to the Seattle defense and thus I expect numerous flags to be thrown on Friday and most of them will benefit the Bears. Chicago has a strong offense and a suspect defense and that means this game will feature strength on strength. Hard to take away much from the Tennessee – Green Bay game since weather played a role but playing in the Superdome is always a factor that greatly favors the home team. Buffalo would have went over tonight’s posted number in all 4 games last year. 2-Unit Play. Take 'Over' 43.5 New Orleans at Houston (4 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 25) This game is the equivalent of NFL Preseason Home Run Derby. Here are the last five scores in the preseason games played between these two teams since 2007: 34-27, 27-14, 38-20, 38-14 and 31-27. That is an average of 54 points per game and all but one of the five games has surpassed the present total of 43.5. And that was the year of the lockout. (They also had a regular season meeting in 2011 that had 73 total points scored). Houston is No. 2 in the NFL this preseason in yards per game, racking up an impressive 427 per outing and 25.5 points per game. The Saints have managed 398 yards and 22.5 points per game. And they will only get better. On top of that, the Saints defense is terrible. They are still learning Rob Ryan's ill-conceived blitz-blitz-blitz schemes and they somehow allowed 20 points to the Raiders last week. Houston should move the ball at-will. They are an established, veteran offense with a very good scheme that will have the Saints overmatched. And you know Drew Brees is going to find his points, especially against a lot of base defense from the Texans. Sean Payton is still very motivated after a season off and he is getting back in the flow. He won't take anything for granted. I think that this one is going to sail the total, just like the last few games have, and that makes this a solid value spot.

10 Unit Play. #27/#277 Take San Diego Chargers over Arizona Cardinals (Saturday 10 pm) NFL Preseason Game of the Year! The Cardinals enter this game 2-0 straight-up and 2-0 ATS while the Chargers are 0-2 straight-up and 1-1 ATS. That being said, Arizona has done nothing on offense to impress me especially with their first string. Their defense has been world beaters collecting 8 turnovers over two games. It is important for the Chargers to protect the football in this game, something they did not do early against Chicago in Week 2. That has got to be a point of this week under first year Coach Mike McCoy. San Diego also has a couple of coaches that were in Arizona last year in Ken Whisenhunt and Kevin Spencer. You can bet Coach Whisenhunt would like to put on a big performance in his first game back in the desert. What this game comes down to is that I am a much bigger fan of Phillip Rivers compared to Carson Palmer. Both of them are statues in the pocket and turnover the football but Rivers has had much more success in the playoffs than has Palmer. San Diego was down 20-0 last week against Chicago and still managed to get within 30-28 late in the game and they did cover the spread. Week 3 is the dress rehearsal week and thus we can expect to see a lot of Phillip Rivers and Charlie Whitehurst in this game. This is their first home game under a new coach and that will propel them to a 4-7 point victory.

1 Unit Play. #16/#414 Take Over in Oakland Raiders @ New Orleans Saints (Friday 8 pm) Week 1 was all about the over, and thus the books really jacked up the totals in Week 2 to avoid a repeat of the previous week. I still believe that there is value in the over, especially in this game, since neither team looked explosive in Week 1. The Raiders went way over the posted total in their Week 2 game last year by giving up 31 points to the Arizona Cardinals. The Saints second- and third-week games last year both went way over the posted total. Sean Payton needs to get back in the grove since he was suspended all of last season, and this team wins by throwing the football. That being said, this spread is inflated, and the point spread winner lies with the underdog. I see a competitive 24-21 game, and we will collect with both the side and the total.

The Chargers did not perform well in Week 1, especially in the second half, giving up 24 points to the Seattle backups. I expect a much better effort in Week 2 since Mike McCoy is a new head coach and San Diego needs to sell tickets in the regular season. That makes preseason football more important to them. Chicago also lost their Week 1 game to Carolina, and thus I expect this game to be more competitive and be decided late in the fourth quarter by less than three points. That will put us in great shape collecting with the underdog.

10 Unit Play. #32/#282 Take Indianapolis Colts over Buffalo Bills (Sunday 1:30 pm NFL Network) Top NFL Play of the Week. Buffalo is really banged up at quarterback with Kevin Kolb suffering a freak injury, and the other two quarterbacks are rookies. That is nowhere near what Indianapolis offers at quarterback with Andrew Luck, Matt Hasselbeck, and Chandler Harish. Rookies tend to struggle in the preseason, and, thus, I just do not see the Buffalo offense putting points on the board without the help of turnovers in this game. One may believe that new head coach Doug Marrone will want to go all out, especially since he is coming from college where there is no preseason. But, unlike Chip Kelly, Marrone is an NFL guy, having coached in the league from 2001-2009 so he is well aware how the exhibition season works. The Colts opened with a day game last year in Week 1 and won 38-3. History will repeat itself again on Sunday.

1 Unit Play. #2/#241 Take Miami Dolphins over Dallas Cowboys (Sunday 8 pm NBC) The NFL Preseason kicks off with the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, OH. This game features two teams that did not make the postseason last year but have visions of making the playoffs in 2013. Miami has a second year coach in Joe Philbin and they did not perform well at all in preseason going 0-4 straight-up and 0-4 ATS. Not giving a crap in the preseason did not roll over into success in the regular season so thus I expect a better and much more effective effort this preseason starting on Sunday night. The main key in this game is that Dallas has four quarterbacks on the roster and Miami has only three quarterbacks on their roster. The game will be all about the back-ups and I like Matt Moore and Pat Devlin a lot as back-ups. The Dolphins are favored for a reason in this game and I expect them to pull away in half No. 2 and win this game by double digits.

Coach Jeff Fisher has always treated the 4th game of the preseason like a dress rehearsal and tonight should be no different.

Cleveland has been a doormat in the league since they came back but one must remember that this is an exhibition game and not a regular season affair. Because of that, the Packers injury problems will be too much for them to overcome. Green Bay is one if not the most injured team in the league at the moment. They just cannot afford any more injuries to their key players and I fully expect them to take a cautious approach in this game. QB Rogers may shine early in this game, but getting over a field goal will eventually allow the Browns to cover and likely win this game straight-up in the second half. Generally the Packers bounce back well after a poor showing in the preseason, but injuries have taken its toll and that will not be the case tonight.

Matt Hasselbeck, Jake Locker, Matt Flynn, Tavaris Jackson, and Russell Wilson all are vying for the No. 1 spot on their respective teams and thus I expect much more passing in this game setting up a strong edge with the over. These five individuals will want to make a name for themselves and you do not do that be handing off the football. Tennessee averaged 19 points per game in the 2011 exhibition games and Seattle scored over 20 points in three of their four 2011 exhibition games. 1 Unit Play. #242 Take New Orleans Saints over Arizona Cardinals (Sunday 8 pm NFL Network) The Saints are a pissed off team after the commissioner laid the wood on them this offseason for a bounty program that their defense players and coaches established. Because of this there coach has been suspended for the season and their interim coach will be suspended for some regular season games. But Joe Vitt is coaching this game and he will be a first year head coach and that is usually a ticket to success during the preseason. He needs to become familiar with the head coaching duties and thus I expect some more aggressive play calling on both sides of the football. New Orleans has a solid quarterback rotation with Drew Brees, Chase Daniel, Luke McCown and all of them are capable of putting points on the board. Arizona is just a mediocre team in a bad division and neither Kevin Kolb or John Skelton impress me that much. Kolb was given a big contract to sign with Arizona and lost his job last season to the youngster. Expect New Orleans to jump out early and maintain control of this game for sixty minutes giving us the point spread victory with the favorite.

The Texans have looked impressive thus far in 2011 but this will be their first road game of the preseason and they are facing a coach in Jim Harbaugh that wants to install a winning attitude. Coach John Harbaugh got some backlash for running up the score in his last preseason game against Kansas City and we fully expect him to hold back if he is leading late and not go for the kill. 10 Unit Play. #422 Take Over in Oakland @ San Francisco (Saturday 8 pm)NFL Preseason Game of the Year. The annual Bay Area preseason meeting will take place on Saturday night at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, CA. Both teams are expected to challenge for playoff spots this season and both teams have new coaches. Week one proved that the preseason totals were established too low, as the majority of games went over the posted totals. Expect a similar result in this game, as the Oakland Raiders look to go over the posted total for the 10th time in their last 11 preseason games. You did read that right, as only 1 time since 2008 have the Raiders went under the posted total in a preseason game. That fact is just too good to pass up and after using them in Week 1 for one of our selections we will come right back with them in Week 2.
The Raiders also have a nice quarterback rotation with Jason Campbell, Kyle Boller, and Trent Edwards, all of which have starting experience in the NFL. San Francisco has Alex Smith, who is still starting despite very little results from his time in San Francisco, but the cupboard behind him is pretty empty. He did not play well in Week 1 and expect him to improve upon that with more reps in Week 2.
Oakland gave up 24 points to Arizona including 17 in the second half and that alone shows how bad their defensive reserves are since Arizona has terrible quarterbacks after Kevin Kolb left the game. Oakland has given up an average of 25.3 points per game in their last 3 preseason games. Expect both teams to reach the twenties in points and we will not worry if San Francisco can cover the spread and just collect with the over.

3 Unit Play. #279 Take Minnesota over Tennessee (Saturday 8 pm) A couple of teams in rebuilding mode are set to do battle to open up their respective preseasons. The Titans are a complete mess with a new coach and a stop gap quarterback in Matt Hasselbeck. This is just too many points to be laying considering that the Titans will be without their best play in Chris Johnson, as he is currently holding out and wanting a new deal. Both teams have about the same talent in quarterbacks, with a washed up veteran starting, followed by an unproven rookie. That being said, I like the overall team for Minnesota much better than what I do for Tennessee. The veterans of Minnesota still believe that they have one run in them and it would likely have to be this season. Tennessee was always a good preseason team under Jeff Fisher, but now we enter the Mike Munchak era. Tennessee will not be favored in very many games this season and laying this many in the preseason is too much. Coach Fisher got off a sinking ship just in time.

2 Unit Play. #272 Take Cleveland (pk) over Green Bay (Saturday 7:30 pm NFL Network) The Packers are the defending Super Bowl Champions and a very public team. During the preseason the favorite is almost always the home team but one must remember that Green Bay was favored on the road in the NFC Championship Game against Chicago and in the Super Bowl against the Pittsburgh despite being a No. 6 seed in the playoffs. That alone tells you how much of a public team the Packers are and that sets up for a really strong play tonight with the Cleveland Browns. One of the best theories in the preseason is playing a new head especially if that coach has not been a NFL head coach in his career. That will be the case tonight with Pat Shurmur making his debut after having been an assistant coach in college and the NFL for over 20 years. The Browns were just 5-11 in 2010 and they were ready to clean house and start fresh in 2011. QB Colt McCoy appears to be the No. 1 and expect him to get some playing time in this game, as he needs reps in order to get ready for the start of the season. That is certainly not the case with the Packers, as Aaron Rogers will likely play only sparingly and that leaves back-ups Matt Flynn and Graham Harrell. The Browns also have a serviceable back-up in Seneca Wallace, who played with President Mike Holmgren numerous years in Seattle. The Packages just do not care about this game evident by the fact they will not be practicing on Friday, instead making a trip to the White House to celebrate their achievement last year. Throw in the fact that their family night was a mess last Saturday in which they were able to play only twenty minutes due to the weather and all this leads me to believe that the Browns will take this game in convincing fashion. Coach Mike McCarthy is just 9-11 straight-up in the preseason and this is certainly a year where he has nothing to prove since they are coming off a Super Bowl Championship. The Browns will have the motivation to make a statement and we will collect with them along the way.

3-Unit Play. Take #281 Pittsburgh over Denver (8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 29) This is a play on one of our strongest preseason systems and it is actually a pretty basic one. Teams that are 2-0 both SU and ATS and going on the road in the third week of the preseason are 27-8 ATS going back to 1996. This system is also an exceptional 6-0 in the last two years. And as you look deeper into this, the play makes perfect sense. Josh McDaniels is just 1-5 in the preseason as a head coach and has shown little to no interest in winning these games. And on the flip side is Mike Tomlin, who is 12-3 in the preseason and wants to win every time he steps on the field. A full half of the Pittsburgh defense is a huge advantage for us, particularly against a Denver offense that hasn't looked that sharp this year. Denver has really gotten worked over in its two preseason games, at Cincinnati and at Detroit. And their No. 1 defense has been shredded. Pittsburgh still has a quarterback battle going on behind Big Ben and I really like the depth that they have at the position, especially compared to what the Broncos are rolling out in the second half. We have a better team, on a short number, with two coaches that have completely different approaches to the preseason, and one excellent system that
