Notre Dame at Michigan Spreads
September 11, 2009
There’s no second-guessing which premier matchup takes the cake in college football’s second week. USC goes to Ohio State to face off against the Buckeyes at the Horseshoe, and there will be plenty of media hype covering these two teams. If you are going to bet this game, do so at BetUS and get a FREE $500 bonus!
Even with that game on the board, we’re going to focus on another important contest, our game of the week pitting Notre Dame against Michigan. Both the Irish and the Wolverines looked great in their respective openers, and now the heat is on for the two prestigious programs to see which can avoid a costly early season loss.
Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis plausibly couldn’t have demanded a better start to the season last week against Nevada. Granted, Nevada couldn’t put upt any points throughout the contest, but it was the consistent and fatal aerial attack that flourished under quarterback Jimmy Clausen. The junior, who is finally living up to the hype, threw for 315 yards on 15-of-18 and four scores. His receivers Michael Floyd and Golden Tate look to be a very dynamic pair, while tight end Kyle Rudolph is physically talented enough to dominate at his position. The running game, though, still appears questionable, and 178 rushing yards against a shaky Wolf Pack defense still doesn’t mean a whole lot. Still, Notre Dame was able to cover as 14.5-point favorites in front of their home faithful.
Michigan, also impressed their fans, but it was the new players that did the most to capture the focus of the Wolverine sponsors. True freshman quarterback Tate Forcier threw three TDs and led the offense for most of the game, not having any errs. Another rising star coming on strong is the speed merchant Denard Robinson, who got some hype in the offseason for leaving his shoes untied when playing. Evidently he doesn’t need to, as a outstanding 43-yard dash for a score displayed he acknowledges precisely how to make things happen when he has the football. Just like Notre Dame, Michigan covered the spread, as a 31-7 victory surpassed the 13 points they were favored at home to Western Michigan.
Now breaking down this game. And the deciding component with two offenses that can both light up the scoreboard should be the defenses and which outfit is more adequate when needed. Personally, and this may be me being biased towards Michigan, the Wolverines have a swifter and fiercer defensive unit. I think they can get more heat on the quarterback, and the secondary seems more probable to slow down the passing game. And that will be the test, as Weis will certainly be determined to move the chains and see how effective Clausen can be in tearing up the back four of Michigan for some action through the air.
Notre Dame comes in as 3.5-point road favorites. However the football odds can be found at 3 if you compare between books. I would think keep steady between 3 and 3.5, and that could be important, as I see a back-and-forth game all day up in Michigan. The dog has covered eight of the past 10 games in this series, but Notre Dame is 7-3 ATS in the past 10 vs. the Wolverines. The Irish’s last win in Ann Arbor was in 2005, and Michigan has won four of the previous five at home over Notre Dame. No total has been published yet, but if I had to make out a guess, I would judge around 44 or 45.

PITTSBURGH UNDER 7.5 wins
Pittsburgh one of the numerous programs in the average Big East who could either win the conference or battle Syracuse at the bottom. There’s a lot of doubt in the Big East with Rutgers, West Virginia, USF and Pittsburgh among those who could win it all. Upon first look in Pittsburgh you’ll see no LeSean McCoy who stabilized the backfield along with LaRod Stephens-Howling who has also departed. The Pittsburgh Panthers bring back 15 starters but are impaired by Dave Wannstedt who isn’t exactly a coaching mastermind. The schedule is also going to be difficult.
Sure Victories (4): 9/5 Youngstown State, 9/19 Navy, 10/10 UConn, 11/7 Syracuse
Automatic Defeats (2): 9/26 @ NC State, 10/16 @ Rutgers
Up in the Air (6):
9/12 @ Buffalo — The Bulls played the Panthers tough in Pittsburgh falling 27-16 to them and were only down by a single point going in the 4th frame. Pittsburgh lost to Bowling Green last year on their home turf and the Bulls have comparable talent. James Starks and Naaman Roosevelt will need to have a great game for the Bulls to come away with a win.
10/2 @ Louisville — The Panthers have lost seven of their last eight to Louisville stopping a seven game losing skid last season. The Cardinals return 13 starters and a compelling offense that will need time to get in rythym with new QB Justin Burke, the NC State transfer.
10/24 vs. USF — Matt Grothe and George Selvie lead the uneven Bulls. Last year Pittsburgh came through in Florida but the Bulls got the game in Pittsburgh two years ago. USF lives and dies by their strong defense and has shown they can win as a visitor beating up NC State last year.
11/14 vs. Notre Dame — The Irish will be much better this season and are 12-3 since 1988 against Pitt. Last year Pittsburgh won 36-33 in 4OT against the Irish in South Bend so want back will be on ND’s minds.
11/27 @ West Virginia — Revenge will be involved in this one as well. The Panthers have won two straight in this rivalry but Jarrett Brown and Jock Sanders lead an offense that can put up points if need be. The Mountaineers may also have the best secondary in the Big East.
12/5 vs. Cincinnati — Eight starters on offense are back plus maybe the top coach in the conference in Brian Kelly. The Bearcats could need this game for bowl eligibility. Cincy won last year’s contest.
Leans:
TCU UNDER 9 (+110) – Tricky road games to Virginia, Clemson, Air Force, Brigham Young and a sneaky trip to Wyoming could help the Under.
OKLAHOMA STATE OVER 9 (+110) – The Cowboys just have to take one game out of the group of Texas, @ Oklahoma and Georgia.

Tulane v. Tulsa Football Picks
September 4, 2009
Will Tulsa attract bettor’s attention? Coach Todd Graham has the Golden Hurricane striving for larger aspirations even with assembling a 21-7 record the previous two seasons. Tulsa has competed in the Conference USA title game the previous two years and fell to defeat on both efforts. He desires the program to revert back to 2005, when the Golden Hurricane took home the opening C-USA championship. That dream starts tonight when they visit the Green Wave as 13.5-point chalk. At last look, about 85% of bets at Sportsbook.com were placed with the Golden Hurricane.
It will not be an easy task, since Graham needs to replace a quarterback and five other starters on offense. Junior Jacob Bower has earned the inside track as the signal caller, after studying on the sidelines last year. The offensive line has to be rebuilt in order for Bower to win. If these ingredients come together promptly, Tulsa can build on its 8-3 record at the pay window in September.. Defensively, eight players return, nonetheless, according to the head coach they need to play with more conviction, after yielding 30 points or more six times last season. “Defensively, we have to return to doing what we’ve done in the past of being productive, and that’s a relentless attitude to get to the ball and get back to a tough edge mentality defensively,” Graham said. “What we have to improve on defense is not giving away too many one play drives.” Sportsbook.com has Tulsa as 13.5-point visiting chalk with total of 64 and they are just 4-7 against the spread in that role under Graham.
The Green Wave has won six games in two years under head coach Bob Toledo and everyone affiliated with the program figures this has to be the year to set about displaying positive marks. “We know we’ve really got to right the ship,” wide receiver Jeremy Williams told the Times-Picayune. “We’re not looking towards the future. We’ve got to do it tonight.”Tulane welcomes back seven starters on offense and redshirt sophomore Joe Kemp who won the quarterback competition. Tulane will be aided by the return of RB Andre Anderson, who was 4th in the nation in rushing and all-purpose yards when he went down to injury in game seven. They will have to score points to stick with Tulsa, however, they are just 4-10-1 ATS when an underdog at home. Tulane begins this season with misguiding defensive stats. The Green Wave was 14th in the nation in pass defense, giving up 173 yards per game. That was at least in part to ceding 218 (5.7 yards per carry) yards per game via the run. Senior DE Logan Kelley backbones a very knowledgeable front four that must raise its game in 2009. Tulane is 7-23-1 at the pay window in its last 31 conference matchups.
Tulsa plays four of their first five games on the road, including the first three. It should be noted that they haven’t covered their last four times as a visitor. The Green Wave is 0-4 SU and ATS versus the Golden Hurricane in C-USA action, with an average margin of 33 points per game. This conference clash begins at 8 ESTon ESPN, with Tulsa 7-2-1 OVER as road chalk. Do your football betting at Sportsbook.com and take advantage of Reduced Juice Fridays (-105).
